When you think about British Style, you might picture elegant and tailored looks, such as tweed jackets, plaid patterns, and trench coats. However, during my time here, I have discovered that London’s street style is more diverse and eclectic than expected. The city’s multicultural environment gives rise to a variety of styles. These range from classic elegance to minimalist Scandi chic and bohemian and romantic florals. This mix of styles also reflects the fickle British weather, which can change multiple times a day, requiring you to layer your clothing accordingly.
The Brits have made significant contributions to the fashion world, introducing timeless pieces that have become essential items in closets around the globe. Among these are the classic trench coat, corduroy fabric, and the iconic Dr. Martens shoes. Additionally, the British style has been exemplified by style icons like Princess Diana, Alexa Chung and Kate Moss.
In this post, I share my top tips for incorporating London’s street style into your wardrobe. You can also find some inspiration from my favourite British style icons.
Oversized Silhouettes Rule
Since the COVID-19 outbreak, fashion has shifted towards oversized and comfortable silhouettes resembling loungewear that can also be worn outside. In the UK, many people started working from home. This shift influenced street style to incorporate more comfortable elements into elegant clothing. As a result, many street looks comprise elevated items like blazers and tailored trousers in oversized styles.
A Mixture of High and Low
Reminiscent of classic British heritage pieces, London’s street style combines elevated and casual fashion elements to create a unique and versatile look. It takes traditional, timeless pieces and gives them a modern twist, conveying the impression of a sophisticated yet effortless look.
Forever in Sneakers
The one thing constantly repeated on London streets is people wearing sneakers. Londoners have a deep affection for sneakers. Therefore, you will see them in an array of styles and colours. Sneakers serve as an ideal accessory to infuse a relaxed and casual vibe when paired with smart items, creating a perfect classic casual look.
The Weather Forecast is Only a Recommendation
UK weather can be cold and rainy, whether in July or January. Brits, known for their resilience to cold weather, take every opportunity to wear their summer items year-round. Moreover, the weather can be unpredictable throughout the day, so you may find yourself adding or removing layers as the temperature fluctuates.
Diverse Aesthetics – a Cocktail of Styles and Influences
London’s street style is a fascinating blend of individuality and diversity. The city’s rich cultural tapestry inspires its fashion, resulting in many unique street styles. People confidently mix styles, eras, and influences. One of the most captivating aspects is the seamless integration of timeless pieces, such as loafers and trench coats, with contemporary, trendy items. This mixture captures the exciting vibe of London’s fashion scene.
British Style Icons to Follow
I have always enjoyed following British influencers and style icons, even before moving to London. Some have a classic, timeless style, while others have a more eclectic and colourful style.

b. Hannah from Cocobeautea and Nina Lea Caine inspire more classic elegance.
c. I love Chloe Hayward and Charlotte Olivia‘s trendy, casual styles.
d. If you are more into eclectic, colourful styles, check out Kerry Walker and Franki Dammone.
