Every wardrobe needs a solid foundation that will allow you to create various outfits that fit your style and lifestyle, just like an artist needs his canvas and brushes to create a work of art. Building your wardrobe foundations requires knowing your style and defining your wardrobe staples. Once you define them, you’ll be able to easily get dressed in the morning and be more creative with your wardrobe.
In this post, I’ll be sharing the updated list of my top 10 wardrobe staples. As my style evolved in the past two years, my wardrobe staples have also changed. Some of the items I considered staples weren’t items I was wearing as much as I thought I would. Therefore, I exchanged them for other staples I am wearing more often.
Adding these items into my wardrobe took me several years since I wanted them to be in the right size and fit for me. I also wanted to invest in items that would last for years in my closet. Today, these items are also an integral part of my capsule wardrobes. Most of them are staples I wear all year long.
If you also wish to add some wardrobe staples to your closet, I recommend you’ll take the time to find the ones in the perfect style, fit, and quality for you. I added some links for staples by brands I can recommend the quality of their garments.
Blazers
Black, brown, or plaid, a blazer is a must-have item in my wardrobe. I love styling it with a camisole or a blouse for a more elegant look. Otherwise, I’ll wear it with a t-shirt or a tank top for a more casual, effortless look. Its tailored cut and fabric can elevate every outfit and give you a more polished look. I usually love buying my blazers second-hand. It is an item that can be kept in excellent condition over the years, and the material’s quality is generally better. Not to mention the price is usually much more affordable. In autumn/winter, I love wearing wool blazers and linen or short-sleeved blazers in spring/early summer.

Trench Coat
Another must-have timeless item in my closet is the trench coat. Trench coats usually come in beige, khaki, or camel. They are resistant to rain and can be perfect in transitional weather. Thanks to its structured shape and neutral color, it elevates any outfit (even a sweatshirt). Even though you can find trench coats in every high-street store, I recommend checking out second-hand options. You can even look for an authentic Burberry trench coat, the inventor of the first trench coat, at a more affordable price. Lately, I’ve also added a trench-style jacket I found at the local thrift shop.

Denim Jacket
A denim jacket is another versatile piece in my wardrobe. I layer it over a knit or a lighter top during autumn or spring. I also wear it under a wool coat in winter, adding texture to my outfit. My preferred denim jacket is an oversized cut in the dark indigo wash. I’ve got mine from a thrift shop in Paris called FREE’P’STAR. In many other thrift shops, you can also find a denim jacket in excellent condition.

White T-Shirt
As an art lover, a classic white t-shirt is like a canvas on which I can create countless combinations. You can style it with different accessories such as jewelry or scarves or layer it under a jacket or a blazer in almost every color or shape. I recommend finding a good quality t-shirt from organic cotton that will keep its shape after washing it since it is an item usually worn a lot. I love my t-shirts in a crew neck cut and a bit oversized. You can find below several examples of high-quality t-shirts.

Oxford Button-Up Shirt
An oxford button-up shirt is an all-year staple in my wardrobe. In autumn/winter, I layer it under a knit or over a turtleneck. When spring/summer comes, I wear it buttoned up or open over a tank top. I use several oxford button-ups as wardrobe staples – A white button-up, a striped button-up, and a denim button-up. Their neutral color and classic shape allow me to create various casual yet sophisticated looks.

Striped Top
Stripes are one of the most classic prints you can find, making a long-sleeved striped top (or a mariniรจre in French) a classic wardrobe item. You can wear it with a biker jacket or a trench coat for a casual and effortless everyday look or with a blazer for a more elevated look. During summer, I usually wear a short-sleeved version of a striped top. I’ve linked some options below.

Straight-leg Denim
A pair of straight-leg denim has been a classic item in my wardrobe for many years now. I have several pairs in different washes. My favorite one is the light blue wash. I recommend owning at least one pair of denim in a straight-leg cut in indigo, black, or a light blue wash. You can usually find these kinds of denim pre-loved, such as a vintage Levi’s 501. If you want to add a new pair of denim, I’ve linked some options below.

Tailored Trousers
A newer staple in my wardrobe is tailored trousers. I love a pair of high-waisted trousers with wide legs. De Rococo is my favorite brand for tailored trousers because of the cut and shape of their design. Otherwise, I look for second-hand options. During winter, I wear wool-tailored trousers or linen-tailored trousers for spring/summer. I usually style them with a knit or t-shirt and a pair of sneakers for a casual everyday look.
White trousers
While there might be a tendency to think that white trousers are a summer wardrobe item, they can also work in your winter wardrobe. This makes them a multi-seasonal classic staple in your closet. Thanks to their neutral color, you can easily mix them with other items in your wardrobe, and they add an elegant vibe to your outfit.
