Summer 2024 Capsule Wardrobe – 37 Items for a Casual Chic Style

I always struggle to build a summer wardrobe that I’m pleased with. That’s why I thought that summer in London should feel like a relief. The days are nice, and the temperatures are not too high, so I can still wear layers and style my outfits more easily. However, it’s very different from what I’m used to. The need for light outerwear seems to continue well into summertime. At the moment, I’m not sure how much of my summer wardrobe I’ll actually get to wear this season. However, we’re planning to visit family and friends back home during the summer holiday, so I know that at least then, my summer items will become useful.

Lately, I have been reflecting on my three style words to better understand my style. I’ve chosen the word ‘Classic’ as my practical or realistic word. While “Vintage” used to be my aspirational word, I now feel that in my summer wardrobe, it transforms into “Minimal.” My third and emotional word is “Effortless.” It best represents how I want to feel and look when I get dressed. I’ve kept these words in mind while building my capsule wardrobe.

Capsule Wardrobe Planning – Finding Inspiration

Similar to last year’s capsule wardrobe, my Pinterest summer inspiration board features plenty of minimalist-style outfits inspired by Scandinavian chic. This season, my summer colour palette includes more black mixed with neutrals compared to other seasons. My summer wardrobe staples include linen shirts, waistcoats, midi skirts, and shorts. I love playing with textures in the summertime. That is why crochet tops are among my favourite summer pieces this year. While my Pinterest board might not show much colour, I do tend to wear more colourful accessories and jewellery during the summer.

Summer Capsule New Additions

There are several new additions to my summer wardrobe. These include two light outerwear items, a linen beige jacket and a denim shacket. They will be used as extra layers on chilly mornings and evenings. I also picked up some “fun” pieces to liven up my wardrobe, including a printed beige shirt, a graphic T-shirt, and a crochet top. I love the black and beige colour combo that’s present in both the shirt and the crochet top. The oversized graphic T-shirt is a big trend this summer. It is also the kind of playful, summery piece I enjoy during the season.

Items in the Summer Capsule

Light Outerwear

Summer in London can be pretty unpredictable, and mornings and evenings can still be chilly. That’s why I’ve included some light outerwear pieces in this capsule, such as a camel blazer, linen jacket, and denim shacket.

T-Shirts and Tops

T-shirts are essential items in my summer wardrobe. I enjoy pairing them with skirts or shorts during the summer. The majority of my T-shirts have a crew neck and a boxy fit. For my summer capsule collection, I selected three basic T-shirts, a striped T-shirt, and a graphic print T-shirt. Additionally, tank tops are also a part of my summer basics. I like to wear them under a shirt or a waistcoat.

Shirts and Waistcoats

Shirts and waistcoats help me sustain the classic elements of my wardrobe through summer. They also serve as my go-to pieces for layering in warmer weather. This season, I’ve expanded my waistcoat collection by incorporating black and crochet waistcoats. Shirtwise, I’ve added to my classic all-year shirts a printed short-sleeve shirt and two linen shirts in beige and black.

Trousers

My summer trousers selection includes jeans and casual trousers made of breathable fabrics. I added to my all-year straight-leg jeans in blue and black a pair of white jeans, olive green cotton trousers and beige linen trousers.

Shorts

Bermuda shorts are one of my favourite summer staples. I love styling them with a tank top or a button-up. They elevate my casual outfits thanks to their classic shape. This capsule includes four pairs of blue and black denim shorts, linen, and white cotton shorts.

Skirts

Summer is the only time of the year when I wear skirts. I love wearing midi skirts with classic prints or slip skirts. For this capsule, I chose a red floral wrap skirt and a brown polka-dot skirt.

Dresses

I used to wear floral or romantic dresses during the summer in the past. Lately, however, I’ve been drawn to dresses with a more minimalist and classic design. Therefore, I chose a sleeveless ribbed midi dress in dark beige for this capsule.

Shoes

I’ve added three pairs of sandals and one pair of sneakers to this capsule. These include a pair of black sandals, Birkenstock slides, strappy tan sandals and my Adidas burgundy sneakers.

Outfit Combinations

Most of my outfits are inspired by last year’s summer capsule, with an added layer to make them suitable for the British summer. I feel that many of the outfits here are speculative since I don’t know how warm it will get in the high summer months. I hope to wear most of the items in this capsule this season. Especially since my summer capsules usually contain the largest number of items compared to my other seasonal capsules.

Even though I’m not a big fan of summer, especially when it comes to getting dressed, I would still welcome warmer weather and the chance to wear my summer wardrobe this season.
