Travel Capsule to Italy in the Fall

Post contains adlinks

Ever since I became an art historian, I’ve realised that I needed to return to Florence, the heart of Italy’s Renaissance. I took a summer art course there twenty years ago—how time flies! However, I felt there was still so much more to discover in the city. That’s why we’ve decided to use the kids’ half-term holiday to explore Florence once again.

The weather forecast seemed promising, predicting sunny days with temperatures between 20 and 23 degrees. However, just a few days before our expected arrival, it had been raining continuously. As a result, I needed to pack a travel capsule that included options for both warm and rainy weather.

Items in my Travel Capsule

Similar to my previous travel capsule to Paris, I used the 5-4-3-2-1 packing system as a framework to plan my capsule, making some adjustments along the way. My initial plan consisted of four tops, three outerwear pieces, three pairs of trousers, and two knitwear items. As for accessories, I intended to bring three pairs of shoes, two bags, two belts, and one pair of sunglasses.

The day before our flight, I made some last-minute adjustments to my packing. I added a long-sleeve top and replaced my camel cardigan with a red jumper, as the cardigan was too fitted to be a good layering piece. Additionally, I swapped my suede jacket for a barn jacket, which would be more suitable for rainy weather. This was the final result.

Outfit Combinations

One of the key strategies that helps me select the right items for a travel capsule is planning the outfits I will wear during my travels. If I can incorporate an item into at least two different outfits, I feel confident adding it to the capsule. This was the initial outfit plan I created. It was based on the items I chose at the beginning.

When I made some last-minute changes, I didn’t plan my outfits in advance. Instead, I based my clothing choices on my initial plans, making a few adjustments along the way. I expected the final result to look different. Especially since the weather turned out to be warmer than I anticipated. Here are the outfits I ended up wearing.

As seen in the graphics, I didn’t wear all of my outerwear and shoes. I probably should have packed either a trench coat or a barn jacket rather than both, as one would have been sufficient for rainy weather. Additionally, I didn’t need all the pairs of shoes I packed. One pair of sneakers and one pair of leather shoes, loafers, or Chelsea boots would have been enough. However, I do believe that this is an improvement compared to the previous travel capsule I packed for Paris, and I have become more accurate and efficient with this capsule.

I hope sharing my packing process will help you with your own packing. If you have any travel or packing tips, I would love for you to share them in the comments! 🙂
